Centeotl (Cinteotl), the Maize Lord. His name is often rendered “maize cob lord.” The Mexica pictured him as a young man with ears of maize in his headdress, and honored him with festivals, dances and offerings meant to secure the harvest.
Maize was the foundation of Mesoamerican life: it fed the great cities of the Mexica, and Mesoamerican peoples told that humankind itself was made with corn. In one telling, Quetzalcoatl was led by a giant red ant to a mountain full of grain and seeds. Centeotl is understood as a descendant of much older Olmec and Maya maize deities. This design is Aztlan Design’s illustration honoring the birth of corn.
Printed on a soft, lightweight 100% Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton tee (heather colors are a cotton blend) with a retail fit, ribbed collar, shoulder tape and tear-away label. Original art by Aztlan Design.
