The Mexica Jaguar Warrior, in the Nahuatl language an ocēlōtl, was one of the two elite orders of the Mexica (Aztec) army, fighting alongside the Eagle warriors. Jaguar warriors wore a spotted jaguar suit and helmet into battle, believing the strength of the great cat passed to the one who wore its skin, and the jaguar was closely linked with the powerful god Tezcatlipoca. Honor in Mexica war came from capturing enemies alive for the gods rather than simply killing them, and the ocēlōmeh were among the most respected warriors in Tenochtitlan.

This original illustration by Aztlan Design brings that warrior to life in bold color: a leaping figure in a spotted jaguar suit, crowned with a red and yellow headdress, white ear ornaments and a plume of green quetzal-style feathers, with jade-blue ornaments, flowing sashes and a swirling shield-and-feather glyph at his feet. Inspired by the style of the Mesoamerican codices, it celebrates the courage and artistry of the Mexica people.

Printed on a soft, lightweight 100% Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton tee (heather colors are a cotton blend) with a retail fit, ribbed collar, shoulder tape and tear-away label. Original art by Aztlan Design.
